Aldh5A1은 알데하이드 탈수소효소 초패밀리에 속하며, NAD(P)+ 의존적 효소로 다양한 알데하이드의 산화를 촉매합니다. 이 효소는 알코올 대사 및 지질 과산화 과정에서 생성되는 알데하이드의 해독에 중요한 역할을 합니다.
Aldh5A1은 미토콘드리아 NAD+ 의존성 석시닉 세미알데하이드 탈수소효소로, 결핍 시 4-hydroxybutyricaciduria로 알려진 질환이 발생하며, 발달 지연, 근긴장 저하, 운동실조, 언어 장애, 발작 등의 증상을 유발할 수 있습니다.
최소 두 가지 이소폼이 존재하는 것으로 알려져 있습니다.
