Target Information
CD14 is a 55 kDa GPI-anchored glycoprotein constitutively expressed on the surface of mature monocytes, macrophages, and neutrophils. It functions as a multifunctional lipopolysaccharide receptor and is found both as a membrane-bound and soluble form in serum. CD14 interacts with lipopolysaccharide-binding protein (LBP) to mediate recognition of bacterial lipopolysaccharides. Soluble CD14 (sCD14) can distinguish structural variations among lipopolysaccharides and contributes to neutralization processes in serum. Additionally, CD14 binds apoptotic cells and is involved in allergic, inflammatory, and infectious responses. Alternative splicing produces multiple transcript variants encoding the same CD14 isoform. CD14 dysfunction is associated with conditions such as Mycobacterium chelonae infection and croup.
