Target Information
CD14 is a 55 kDa GPI-anchored glycoprotein expressed on the surface of mature monocytes, macrophages, and neutrophils. It functions as a multifunctional lipopolysaccharide receptor and exists in both membrane-bound and soluble forms. CD14 binds lipopolysaccharides (LPS) through interaction with lipopolysaccharide-binding protein (LBP), playing a key role in innate immune responses. Soluble CD14 (sCD14) can distinguish structural variations in LPS and contributes to neutralization of serum lipopolysaccharides. Additionally, CD14 binds apoptotic cells and is implicated in allergic, inflammatory, and infectious processes. Alternative splicing generates multiple transcript variants encoding the same protein. CD14 dysfunction is associated with conditions such as Mycobacterium chelonae infection and croup.
