Target Information
Cardiac Troponin I (TnI) is an integral inhibitory protein in cardiac muscle, forming a complex with troponin C (TnC) and troponin T (TnT). The TnT subunit binds to tropomyosin to form a troponin-tropomyosin complex, stabilized by TnI binding to actin within muscle thin filaments.
Calcium binding to TnC induces structural changes that release the inhibitory region of TnI from actin, enabling myosin attachment and muscle contraction.
Measurement of blood TnI and TnT levels is a key diagnostic indicator for heart muscle damage and helps differentiate angina from myocardial infarction.
Cardiac Troponin I also inhibits angiogenesis in vivo and in vitro. Mutations in the Cardiac Troponin I gene are associated with familial hypertrophic cardiomyopathy type 7 (CMH7) and familial restrictive cardiomyopathy (RCM).
