Target Information
The C5 gene encodes the fifth component of complement, essential in inflammatory and cytolytic processes.
It consists of alpha and beta chains linked by a disulfide bridge. Upon activation, the alpha chain is cleaved to produce C5a, an anaphylatoxin with strong chemotactic and spasmogenic activity.
The C5b fragment forms a complex with C6, initiating the membrane attack complex formation.
Mutations in this gene can cause complement component 5 deficiency, leading to recurrent severe infections, and are associated with liver fibrosis and rheumatoid arthritis susceptibility.
