BMP6 belongs to the bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) family, which are secreted signaling molecules capable of inducing ectopic bone growth. Many BMPs are part of the transforming growth factor-beta (TGFB) superfamily. BMP6 has a proposed role in early development and may have bone inductive activity similar to BMP5 and BMP7.
