Target Information
Heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoproteins (hnRNPs) are proteins that directly bind to nascent RNA polymerase II transcripts and play an important role in transcript-specific packaging and alternative splicing of pre-mRNAs.
The M1–M4 proteins form a cluster of abundant hnRNPs that bind avidly to poly(G) and poly(U) RNA homopolymers in vitro.
These M proteins are members of the ribonucleoprotein consensus sequence family of RNA-binding proteins, showing similarity to a hypothetical RNA-binding protein from Saccharomyces cerevisiae.
They contain a unique hexapeptide-repeat region rich in methionine and arginine residues (MR repeat motif), similar to a repeat in the 64 kDa subunit of cleavage stimulation factor involved in pre-mRNA 3′-end maturation.
Proteins immunologically related to M exist in diverse eukaryotes ranging from human to yeast.
