Target Information

NEK9 is a NEK-type protein kinase that regulates chromosome alignment and segregation during mitosis.
It contains:

• An N-terminal NIMA-like catalytic domain
• A central domain homologous to the guanine nucleotide exchange factor for GTPase Ran (RCC1)
• A C-terminal coiled-coil domain

NEK9 is phosphorylated by active p34(Cdc2), capable of autophosphorylation and oligomerization.
Activated NEK9 binds Nek6 and RCC1, associates with the human homolog of Drosophila Bicd2, and phosphorylates this coiled-coil protein in vitro.
Expression is observed in normal human brain, and ESTs have been identified from various tissue libraries including normal bone, lymph, thymus, and cancerous cervix, eye, lymph, and placenta.
