Target Information
Beta-defensins (BDs, or hBDs in human) are small cationic peptides with broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against viruses, fungi, and bacteria. They are produced in mucosal epithelia and neutrophils, and their expression is developmentally regulated. Beta-defensins share a conserved defensin motif with multiple cysteine residues and a stable tertiary structure. In addition to immune defense, many beta-defensins are involved in sperm maturation and capacitation. Beta-defensin 32 (DEFB132) is a 95 amino acid secreted protein likely containing a signal peptide that requires proteolytic cleavage for activation.
