Target Information

Influenza A virus is a major public health threat, killing more than 30,000 people per year in the USA. In early 2009, a novel swine-origin influenza A (H1N1) virus was identified in specimens obtained from patients in Mexico and the United States. The virus spread globally, leading the World Health Organization to declare a pandemic on June 11, 2009.

Influenza A virus possesses one of sixteen possible Hemagglutinin (HA) and one of nine possible Neuraminidase (NA) surface proteins. Hemagglutinin facilitates viral attachment, while Neuraminidase aids in viral release. These proteins trigger immune responses that can prevent infection or reduce viral replication.

The H1N1 strain combines genetic elements from human, swine, and avian influenza viruses with additional pig H3N2 genes from Eurasia. Due to its distinct antigenic properties, human immunity against this new swine influenza virus is limited, though older age groups may show partial protection.
