Target Information
Influenza A virus is a major public health threat, responsible for over 30,000 deaths annually in the USA.
In 2009, a novel swine-origin influenza A (H1N1) virus emerged and rapidly spread worldwide, leading to a pandemic declared by the WHO on June 11, 2009.
Influenza A virus possesses one of sixteen possible Hemagglutinin (HA) and one of nine possible Neuraminidase (NA) surface proteins. Hemagglutinin facilitates viral attachment, while Neuraminidase aids in viral release. Both proteins elicit immune responses that prevent infection or reduce viral replication.
The 2009 H1N1 strain combines human, swine, and avian influenza genes, with additional H3N2 genes from Eurasian pigs. These unique antigenic properties limit human immunity to the new strain, though older populations may retain partial protection.
