Target Information
This gene encodes a homodimeric glycoprotein that hydrolyzes the terminal alpha-galactosyl moieties from glycolipids and glycoproteins. The enzyme predominantly hydrolyzes ceramide trihexoside and can catalyze the hydrolysis of melibiose into galactose and glucose. Mutations in this gene affect enzyme synthesis, processing, and stability, leading to Fabry disease — a rare lysosomal storage disorder resulting from failure to catabolize alpha-D-galactosyl glycolipid moieties.
