Target Information
The Slc22 family of organic anion and cation transporters (OATs, OCTs, OCTNs) are transmembrane proteins mainly expressed in kidney and liver. They contain 12 predicted alpha-helical transmembrane domains and a large extracellular loop between TMDs 1 and 2.
SLC22 family transporters function as:
- Uniporters mediating facilitated diffusion (OCTs)
- Anion exchangers (OAT1, OAT3, URAT1)
- Na(+)/l-carnitine cotransporters (OCTN2)
These proteins participate in absorption and excretion of drugs, xenobiotics, and endogenous compounds, contributing to homeostasis in various organs.
Mutations in SLC22 family members may lead to diseases such as primary systemic carnitine deficiency or idiopathic renal hypouricemia and affect drug metabolism.
SLC22A17, known as the Lipocalin 2 receptor, shows high expression in hematopoietic stem cells.
