Target Information

The calcium pump of the plasma membrane, termed PMCA ATPase, pumps calcium from the cytosol to the extracellular space. This membrane-bound enzyme is related to other ATPases such as SERCA ATPase and the sodium/potassium pump.

There are four genes encoding PMCA ATPase, producing 20 isoforms via alternative splicing.

• Gene products 1 and 4 are expressed in most tissues.
• Gene products 2 and 3 show tissue-specific expression.
• In the pancreas, beta cells express only the 4b isoform, while alpha and gamma cells express both 4a and 4b isoforms.
• Different splice variants have varying affinities for calcium and calmodulin (Cat. # MA3-917, MA3-918).
