Target Information

CD2 (LFA-2) is a monomeric surface antigen (MW range 45–58 kDa) of the human T-lymphocyte lineage expressed on all peripheral blood T cells. It is one of the earliest T-cell markers, present on more than 95% of thymocytes, and also found on some natural killer cells but not on B lymphocytes.
Monoclonal antibodies against CD2 inhibit rosette formation with sheep erythrocytes, indicating CD2 is the erythrocyte receptor or closely associated with it.
CD2 interacts with CD58 to stabilize adhesion between T cells and antigen-presenting cells. Although their affinity is relatively low in solution, it is compensated at the cell-cell interface to ensure strong adhesion.
T cell activation increases CD2 expression and lateral mobility, facilitating CD2–CD58 interaction and strengthening intercellular adhesion.
CD2 deficiency reduces intestinal inflammation and helps control infection. Diseases associated with CD2 dysfunction include penile squamous cell carcinoma and immune deficiency due to thymus absence.
