SIP1는 SMN 복합체의 구성 단백질 중 하나로, survival of motor neuron (SMN) 단백질 및 여러 Gemin 단백질과 함께 존재합니다. SMN 복합체는 핵 내 ‘gems (gemini of coiled bodies)’이라 불리는 소핵 구조에 위치하며, spliceosomal snRNPs의 조립 및 pre-mRNA 스플라이싱에 필요합니다. SIP1은 SMN과 직접 상호작용하며 복합체 형성에 필수적입니다. 마우스에서 SIP1 유전자의 결손은 snRNP 조립 장애 및 운동신경 퇴화를 유발하였으며, 이는 SMN 복합체 외에서도 SIP1이 추가적인 역할을 가질 가능성을 시사합니다.
