Product Specific Information

This antibody reacts with IFN-gamma, a 16–25 kDa cytokine produced by activated Th1 cells and NK cells.

Target Information

IFN gamma (Interferon gamma, Type II interferon) is a macrophage activation factor produced primarily by T-lymphocytes and natural killer cells in response to antigens, mitogens, and cytokines.
It is a dimeric glycoprotein (~45 kDa) composed of two 146 amino acid subunits. On SDS-PAGE, IFN gamma appears as 25, 20, and minor 15.5 kDa bands due to differential glycosylation.
The biological activity of IFN gamma is highly species-specific, with no cross-reactivity between human and mouse.

Functions include:

  • Antiviral and tumor antiproliferative activity
  • Induction of class I and II MHC
  • Macrophage activation
  • Enhanced immunoglobulin secretion by B lymphocytes

IFN gamma acts through the JAK-STAT pathway upon binding to IFN gamma receptors I and II.
It shares ~40% sequence homology between human and mouse and is regulated by IL-2, FGF basic, and EGF, while downregulated by vitamin D3 or DMN.
Mutations in the IFN gamma gene are associated with aplastic anemia.
