Target Information
CD14 is a 55 kDa GPI-anchored glycoprotein expressed on mature monocytes, macrophages, and neutrophils. It functions as a multifunctional lipopolysaccharide (LPS) receptor and exists both in membrane-bound and soluble forms. CD14 binds LPS in a reaction catalyzed by the lipopolysaccharide-binding protein (LBP). Soluble CD14 (sCD14) can distinguish structural variations among LPS molecules and contributes to neutralization of serum LPS. CD14 also binds apoptotic cells and is involved in allergic, inflammatory, and infectious processes. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding the same isoform. CD14 dysfunction is associated with mycobacterium chelonae infection and croup.
