Target Information

This gene encodes a transmembrane receptor commonly referred to as DC-SIGN, expressed on dendritic cells and macrophages. It plays a key role in the innate immune system by recognizing diverse pathogens, including parasites and viruses.
The protein consists of three domains: an N-terminal transmembrane domain, a tandem-repeat neck domain, and a C-type lectin carbohydrate recognition domain.
The extracellular region functions in both pathogen recognition and cell adhesion by binding carbohydrate ligands.
The neck region enables homo-oligomerization, allowing high avidity binding to multivalent ligands.
Variations in the 23 amino acid repeats of the neck domain affect ligand-binding ability.
DC-SIGN is closely related to L-SIGN (GeneID 10332) but differs in ligand-binding properties and tissue distribution.
Alternative splicing results in multiple variants.
