Target Information

This gene encodes a transmembrane receptor known as DC-SIGN, expressed on the surface of dendritic cells and macrophages. It plays a critical role in the innate immune system by recognizing diverse pathogens, including parasites and viruses.
The protein consists of three domains: an N-terminal transmembrane domain, a tandem-repeat neck domain, and a C-type lectin carbohydrate recognition domain.
The extracellular region mediates both pathogen recognition and cell adhesion through carbohydrate ligand binding. The neck region enables homo-oligomerization, allowing multivalent ligand binding with high avidity.
Variations in the neck domain repeats can affect ligand-binding capacity. DC-SIGN is closely related to L-SIGN (GeneID 10332) but differs in ligand specificity and tissue distribution.
Alternative splicing produces multiple isoforms.
