Target Information

Adducins are heteromeric proteins composed of alpha, beta, and gamma subunits. These subunits are encoded by distinct genes and are part of the membrane skeletal proteins that assemble the spectrin–actin network in erythrocytes and epithelial tissues.
While alpha and gamma adducins are ubiquitously expressed, beta adducin expression is restricted to brain and hematopoietic tissues.
Adducin was originally purified from human erythrocytes as a heterodimer of alpha and beta subunits. Polymorphisms in these subunits are linked to blood pressure regulation in hypertension models.
Each subunit has two domains: a protease-resistant globular N-terminal region and a protease-sensitive C-terminal region containing multiple phosphorylation sites, a calmodulin-binding site, and regions required for spectrin and actin association.
Various alternatively spliced beta adducin mRNAs encoding different isoforms have been identified, though their specific functions remain unclear.
