Target Information

Influenza viruses consist of three types (A, B, and C), which make up three of the five genera in the Orthomyxoviridae family. Commonly known as the flu, influenza strains can affect both birds and mammals. Influenza strains form roughly spherical particles with viral envelopes containing two main glycoproteins (hemagglutinin and neuraminidase), surrounding the viral RNA genome and associated proteins.

The influenza virus genome comprises seven to eight segmented fragments of negative-sense RNA, each encoding distinct viral proteins. Influenza A virus contains eight single-stranded, negative-sense RNAs, each associated with RNA-dependent RNA polymerase composed of PA, PB1, and PB2 proteins. The PA protein is involved in the cap-snatching mechanism via its endonuclease activity, essential for cRNA-dependent viral RNA synthesis.
