Target Information
Calpains are a well-conserved family of calcium-dependent cysteine proteases. These proteins are heterodimers composed of a small invariant subunit and a variable large subunit. The large subunit contains a cysteine protease domain, while both subunits include calcium-binding domains. Calpains are involved in neurodegenerative processes, activated by calcium influx and oxidative stress.
The CAPN9 gene is mainly expressed in the stomach and small intestine and may play specialized roles in digestion. It has been associated with gastric cancer. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms are known for this gene.
