Target Information

SLC6A8 (solute carrier family 6 member 8), also known as CT1 (creatine transporter 1), CRT, or CRTR, is a 635-amino-acid multi-pass plasma membrane protein belonging to the sodium/neurotransmitter (SNF) family.
It is expressed in various tissues including kidney, skeletal muscle, heart, brain, prostate, testis, and colon.
SLC6A8 functions to transport creatine into and out of cells, particularly in brain and muscle tissues.
Creatine is essential for energy supply in muscle and nerve function.
Defects in SLC6A8 cause cerebral creatine deficiency and X-linked creatine deficiency syndrome, characterized by facial anomalies, seizures, and mental retardation.
Multiple isoforms exist due to alternative splicing.
