Target Information
Ribosomes are organelles that catalyze protein synthesis and consist of a small 40S subunit and a large 60S subunit. These subunits are composed of four RNA species and approximately 80 structurally distinct proteins.
The RPS19 gene encodes a ribosomal protein that is a component of the 40S subunit and belongs to the S19E family. It is located in the cytoplasm.
Mutations in RPS19 cause Diamond-Blackfan anemia, a congenital erythroblastopenia characterized by a reduction or absence of erythroid precursors. This suggests that RPS19 may have extra-ribosomal roles in erythropoietic differentiation and proliferation. Elevated expression levels have also been observed in some primary colon carcinomas compared to matched normal tissues.
As typical for ribosomal protein genes, multiple processed pseudogenes of RPS19 are dispersed throughout the genome.
