Target Information
IL-6 encodes a cytokine involved in inflammation and B-cell maturation. The protein acts as an endogenous pyrogen, inducing fever in autoimmune diseases or infections. IL-6 is secreted at sites of acute and chronic inflammation, triggering transcriptional inflammatory responses via the interleukin 6 receptor alpha. Dysregulation of IL-6 is associated with diseases such as diabetes mellitus, systemic juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, Kaposi sarcoma, and rheumatoid arthritis. Elevated IL-6 levels are also observed in viral infections, including COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2).
