Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments of epithelial cells found in both keratinizing tissues (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing cells (e.g., mesothelial cells). Although not typical markers for endothelial cells, cytokeratins can also be present in some microvascular endothelial cells.
At least 20 different CKs, ranging from 40–70 kDa with isoelectric points of 5–8.05, can be identified using two-dimensional gel electrophoresis.
Biochemically, CKs are classified into two groups: type I (acidic polypeptides) and type II (basic polypeptides). Both types are expressed in all epithelial cells.
Monoclonal antibodies to cytokeratin proteins are valuable tools for tumor identification and classification.
