Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments of epithelial cells, present in both keratinizing tissues (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing cells (e.g., mesothelial cells). Although not typical markers for endothelial cells, cytokeratins are also found in some microvascular endothelial cells.
At least 20 different CKs with molecular weights ranging from 40–70 kDa and isoelectric points between 5–8.05 can be identified using two-dimensional gel electrophoresis.
CKs are divided into two classes: type I (acidic polypeptides) and type II (basic polypeptides). All epithelial cells express at least one member of each class.
Monoclonal antibodies against cytokeratin proteins serve as valuable markers for tumor identification and classification.
