Target Information

Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are essential for protein synthesis within mitochondria. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein and 25% rRNA composition, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes. They lack a 5S rRNA, and their protein components vary significantly among species. The MRPS7 gene encodes a 28S subunit protein, analogous to a prokaryotic ribosomal protein involved in organizing the 3′ domain of 16S rRNA near the P- and A-sites. Pseudogenes are found on chromosomes 8p and 12p.
