CPS1 유전자가 암모니아와 중탄산염으로부터 카바모일 인산을 합성하는 미토콘드리아 효소를 암호화합니다. 이 반응은 요소 회로의 첫 번째 단계로, 세포 내 과잉 요소 제거에 중요합니다. 해당 단백질은 미토콘드리아 뉴클레오이드의 핵심 구성 요소일 수 있으며, 세 가지 전사 변형체가 보고되어 있습니다. 가장 짧은 형태는 미토콘드리아에 위치하지 않을 수 있습니다. CPS1 유전자 변이는 카바모일 인산 합성효소 결핍, 지속성 폐고혈압, 골수이식 후 정맥폐쇄성 질환과 관련이 있습니다.
