Target Information
The COL1A2 gene encodes the pro-alpha2 chain of type I collagen, which forms a triple helix with two alpha1 chains and one alpha2 chain. Type I collagen is a fibril-forming collagen found in most connective tissues, including bone, cornea, dermis, and tendon.
Mutations in this gene are associated with:
- Osteogenesis imperfecta types I–IV
- Ehlers-Danlos syndrome type VIIB and recessive classical type
- Idiopathic osteoporosis
- Atypical Marfan syndrome
Symptoms linked to COL1A2 mutations are generally less severe than those caused by COL1A1 mutations, reflecting the distinct structural role of the alpha2 chain in extracellular matrix integrity.
Three transcript variants have been identified, resulting from alternative polyadenylation signals.
