Estrogen Receptor beta (ER beta, NR3A2) 단백질은 약 55 kDa이며, 36–59 kDa 범위의 다양한 isoform이 존재합니다. Human ER beta는 처음 고환에서 클로닝 및 특성화되었습니다.
Estrogen Receptor는 스테로이드/갑상선 호르몬 수용체 초과가족에 속하는 핵 수용체로, 에스트로겐 결합 시 활성화되어 DNA의 Estrogen Response Element (ERE)에 결합하여 전사 조절을 수행합니다.
ER은 두 가지 형태(alpha, beta)를 가지며, 각각 ESR1과 ESR2 유전자에 의해 암호화됩니다. ER beta는 ER alpha와 유사한 결합 친화도를 가지며, 일부 isoform은 ER alpha의 활성을 억제합니다.
ER beta는 다양한 조직에 존재하며, 종양 억제 인자로 작용하여 전립선암, 자폐 스펙트럼 장애, 갑상선 수질암, De Quervain 질환, 심혈관 질환 위험 등에서 중요한 역할을 합니다.
