Target Information
The 26S proteasome is a multicatalytic proteinase complex composed of two main subcomplexes: the 20S core and the 19S regulator.
- The 20S core consists of four rings of 28 subunits (two alpha and two beta rings).
- The 19S regulator includes a base (six ATPase and two non-ATPase subunits) and a lid (up to ten non-ATPase subunits).
Proteasomes function in an ATP/ubiquitin-dependent, non-lysosomal protein degradation pathway and play a key role in MHC class I peptide processing.
The PSMF1 gene encodes a protein that inhibits proteasome activation by the 11S and 19S regulators. Alternative transcript variants have been identified.
