Target Information

Cytosolic and membrane-bound forms of glutathione S-transferase are encoded by two distinct supergene families. Eight distinct classes of soluble cytoplasmic mammalian glutathione S-transferases have been identified: alpha, kappa, mu, omega, pi, sigma, theta, and zeta.
This gene encodes a glutathione S-transferase belonging to the mu class, which functions in detoxification of electrophilic compounds, including carcinogens, therapeutic drugs, environmental toxins, and oxidative stress products, by conjugation with glutathione.
The mu class genes are organized in a cluster on chromosome 1p13.3 and are highly polymorphic, influencing susceptibility to toxins and carcinogens as well as drug efficacy. Null mutations of this gene are linked to increased cancer risk due to reduced detoxification capacity. Multiple protein isoforms are encoded by transcript variants.
