Target Information

This gene encodes a member of the highly conserved cyclin C subfamily. The encoded protein tightly associates with cyclin-dependent kinase 9 (CDK9), forming a major subunit of positive transcription elongation factor b (p-TEFb).
In humans, multiple forms of p-TEFb exist, containing different cyclins along with CDK9. The complex acts as a cofactor of HIV-1 Tat protein, essential for full activation of viral transcription.
Cyclin T1 and CDK9 are involved in transcript elongation via phosphorylation of the RNA polymerase II C-terminal domain. Overexpression of this gene has been linked to tumor growth.
Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants.
