Target Information
Beta-catenin is an adherens junction (AJ) protein involved in cell-cell adhesion and signaling. It interacts with E-cadherin and alpha-catenin to anchor the adhesion complex to the actin cytoskeleton. Beta-catenin also associates with the adenomatous polyposis coli protein and microtubules, participating in signaling pathways including Wnt/Wingless, tyrosine kinases, and phosphatases.
It is expressed in various hair follicle cells and epithelial tissues. Pathological roles have been identified in pilomatrixoma, medulloblastoma, colorectal cancer, ovarian cancer, and other tumors. In the nucleus, beta-catenin co-activates Lef/Tcf transcription factors, promoting transcription of genes such as cyclin D and c-myc, which drive cell proliferation and tumorigenesis.
