Target Information
eIF4E is involved in several cellular processes including enhanced translational efficiency, splicing, mRNA stability, and RNA nuclear export. All eukaryotic cellular mRNAs are capped at their 5′ ends with the 7-methylguanosine cap structure (m7GpppX). EIF4E is a eukaryotic translation initiation factor that directs ribosomes to this cap structure. It is a 24-kDa polypeptide existing both in free form and as part of the multiprotein complex EIF4F. EIF4E is the rate-limiting component in eukaryotic translation and is essential for mRNA–ribosome binding. Other EIF4F subunits include EIF4A (50 kDa, ATPase and RNA helicase) and EIF4G (220 kDa).
