Target Information
CD146 (MCAM) is an integral membrane glycoprotein belonging to the immunoglobulin superfamily. It is expressed at cell-cell junctions in endothelial cells and other normal and malignant cell types. CD146 functions as a calcium-independent cell adhesion molecule and may act in signal transduction via recruitment of Fyn kinase, leading to tyrosine phosphorylation of intracellular proteins involved in actin cytoskeleton assembly.
CD146 plays roles in:
- Endothelial cell adhesion and cohesion
- Melanoma cell interaction with vascular elements, enhancing tumor spread
- Neural crest cell adhesion during embryonic development
- Surface receptor activity triggering tyrosine phosphorylation of FYN and PTK2 and transient intracellular calcium increase
