PKM1은 해당과정(glycolysis)에 관여하는 단백질을 암호화합니다. 이 단백질은 phosphoenolpyruvate에서 ADP로 인산기를 전달하여 ATP와 pyruvate를 생성하는 pyruvate kinase입니다. 갑상선 호르몬과 상호작용하여 세포 대사 효과를 매개할 수 있으며, Opa 단백질(임균 부착 및 침입 관련 외막 단백질)에 결합하는 것으로 알려져 있습니다. 이는 세균 병원성에서의 역할을 시사합니다. 여러 대체 스플라이싱 전사 변형체가 보고되어 서로 다른 isoform을 암호화합니다.
