Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments of epithelial cells found in both keratinizing tissues (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing cells (e.g., mesothelial cells). Although not typical endothelial markers, some microvascular endothelial cells also express cytokeratins. At least 20 different CKs (40–70 kDa, pI 5–8.5) can be identified via two-dimensional gel electrophoresis. CKs are divided into two biochemical classes:
- Type I (acidic polypeptides)
- Type II (basic polypeptides)
Each epithelial cell expresses at least one member from both classes. Monoclonal antibodies against cytokeratin proteins are valuable tools for tumor identification and classification.
