Target Information
Structural Maintenance of Chromosomes (SMC) family proteins play critical roles in nuclear events requiring structural changes of chromosomes, including mitotic chromosome organization, DNA recombination and repair, and global transcriptional repression. These proteins are conserved in eukaryotes, and their dysfunction can lead to mitotic chromosome segregation defects, indicating their essential role in chromosome dynamics.
SMC1 and SMC3 form a heterodimeric complex necessary for metaphase progression and sister chromatid cohesion. Mutations in the SMC1 gene are associated with Cornelia de Lange syndrome 2.
