Target Information

The cystatin superfamily includes proteins containing multiple cystatin-like sequences. Some members are active cysteine protease inhibitors, while others have lost or never acquired this activity.
There are three inhibitory families in the superfamily: type 1 cystatins (stefins), type 2 cystatins, and kininogens.
Type 2 cystatins are cysteine proteinase inhibitors found in various human fluids and secretions. The cystatin locus on chromosome 20 contains most type 2 cystatin genes and pseudogenes.
This gene encodes a type 2 salivary cysteine peptidase inhibitor (S-type cystatin), highly expressed in saliva, tears, and seminal plasma. It exhibits antibacterial and antiviral activity, suggesting a protective role.
