Target Information
The PKLR gene encodes pyruvate kinase, an enzyme that catalyzes the transphosphorylation of phosphoenolpyruvate into pyruvate and ATP, the rate-limiting step of glycolysis.
Defects in this enzyme due to gene mutations or variations can cause chronic hereditary nonspherocytic hemolytic anemia (CNSHA or HNSHA).
Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
