Target Information
Defensins (alpha and beta) are cationic peptides with a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity that form an essential part of the innate immune system.
Alpha-defensins differ from beta-defensins by their disulfide bond pairing. Six human beta-defensins have been identified: BD-1, BD-2, BD-3, BD-4, BD-5, and BD-6.
Beta-defensins are expressed on some leukocytes and epithelial surfaces, functioning not only as antimicrobial agents but also as chemoattractants for immature dendritic cells and memory T cells.
These proteins are expressed as C-terminal portions of precursors and released through proteolytic cleavage. Beta-defensins contain a six-cysteine motif forming three intra-molecular disulfide bonds.
