Target Information
Muscarinic cholinergic receptor 2 (CHRM2) is an acetylcholine receptor that functions as a presynaptic autoreceptor inhibiting acetylcholine release. The M2 receptor mediates smooth muscle contractility and is implicated in Alzheimer’s disease due to selective loss in cortical and hippocampal regions. Increased M2 receptor heterozygosity has been associated with depression in women. Expression has been reported in brain regions such as cerebellum, cerebral cortex, hippocampus, medulla, striatum, thalamus, and in lung and prostate.
