Target Information

Cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL)-mediated cytotoxicity is a key effector mechanism in immunosurveillance against virus-infected or transformed cells. Two mechanisms are known: the perforin-based process and the FAS-based mechanism involving the transducing molecule FAS (APO-1) and its ligand (FAS-L).
The human FAS (APO-1) protein is a 48 kDa cell surface glycoprotein, part of the receptor family that includes CD40, nerve growth factor receptors, and tumor necrosis factor receptors.
FAS antigen is widely expressed on lymphoid cell lines and highly expressed in T cells after TCR crosslinking.
A previously undescribed protein, TDAG51, restores activation-induced apoptosis in cells lacking Fas response.
