Target Information
Voltage-dependent anion channel (VDAC) proteins are abundant pore-forming proteins located in the eukaryotic mitochondrial outer membrane and also expressed in the plasma membrane. At least three different VDAC genes have been identified in vertebrates. VDAC proteins play an essential role in cellular metabolism and in the early stages of apoptosis. VDAC forms a major pathway for metabolite exchange between the cytosol and mitochondria (e.g., ADP/ATP, succinate, citrate). VDAC1 in the plasma membrane may regulate apoptosis through its redox activity.
