Target Information

IGF1 (Insulin-like growth factor-1) is structurally and functionally related to insulin but exhibits much higher growth-promoting activity. It induces various cellular responses including proliferation, differentiation, migration, and survival. IGF1 acts as a polypeptide growth factor stimulating the proliferation of cell types in muscle, bone, and cartilage tissues. It enhances glucose transport and metabolism in osteoblastic cells at lower concentrations than insulin.

In circulation, IGFs are primarily bound to IGF-binding proteins (IGFBPs), which extend their half-life and regulate tissue targeting. IGF1 is a potent activator of the AKT signaling pathway, promoting cell proliferation and inhibiting apoptosis. Mature human IGF1 shares 100% homology with bovine and porcine proteins. Low IGF1 levels have been associated with Alzheimer’s disease. Defects in the IGF1 gene cause insulin-like growth factor 1 deficiency, and multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
