Target Information

The CD4 antigen is involved in the recognition of MHC class II molecules and acts as a co-receptor for HIV. CD4 is primarily expressed in T helper cells but may also be found in monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. At the tissue level, CD4 expression occurs in thymus, lymph nodes, tonsils, spleen, and certain regions of the brain and gut. CD4 contributes to early T-cell activation through interaction with the T-cell receptor complex and protein tyrosine kinase Lck, and may mediate neuronal damage in infectious and immune-related CNS diseases. Multiple alternatively spliced transcripts have been identified.
