Target Information

This gene encodes uridine 5'-monophosphate synthase, a bifunctional enzyme catalyzing the final two steps of the de novo pyrimidine biosynthetic pathway.

• The N-terminal enzyme, orotate phosphoribosyltransferase, converts orotic acid to orotidine-5'-monophosphate (OMP).
• The C-terminal enzyme, OMP decarboxylase, converts OMP to uridine monophosphate (UMP).
  Defects in this gene cause hereditary orotic aciduria. Alternate splicing results in multiple transcript variants.
